Object: Porites rus Global Coral Spawning Observation – January 2025

 

Dear listers,

 

I am writing regarding an upcoming global citizen science project organized by Tama No Te Tairoto, an NGO based in French Polynesia. Our current main project is centered on the spawning of the coral Porites rus, a species abundant in French Polynesia that spawns approximately 1.5 hours after sunrise. After 3 years of studying the spawning of the coral Porites rus in French Polynesia, on January 2025 (on the 18th or 19th, depending on your time zone), we are launching a global observation project of this phenomenon called “Connected By the reef – Te firi a’au ”. We already know that the spawning is synchronized across several locations (Pacific and Indian ocean), including French Polynesia, Fiji, and Reunion Island, and we are eager to learn how far this phenomenon extends, especially in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, and around the equator.
