Welcome to the NEW Coral-List!
 
Coral-List found a new home in 2024 with at the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS), after beginning its life in 1995 at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), where it was guided by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program's strategy for coral reef conservation. The ICRS deeply thanks Jim Hendee, Mike Jankulak, and all of AOML's Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division. For more information on Coral-List, please see:

The purpose of Coral-List is to provide a forum for Internet discussions and announcements among coral health researchers pertaining to coral reef ecosystem research, conservation, and education. The list is primarily for use by coral reef ecosystem researchers, scientists and educators, but is open to everybody. As of June 2024 over 9,600 coral reef conservationists and concerned citizens were subscribed to the list.
 
Appropriate <b>coral reef ecosystem-related</b> subjects for discussion might include:<dir>
<li> land-based sources of pollution
<li> climate change 
<li> over-fishing 
<li> inter-governmental research and conservation efforts
<li> socioeconomics
<li> outreach and educational programs
<li> high predation on coral reefs
<li> coral bleaching events and research
<li> outbreaks of diseases affecting coral reef organisms
<li> environmental monitoring sites
<li> incidences of reproduction by coral reef organisms
<li> shipwrecks on coral reefs and their effects
<li> international meetings and symposia
<li> funding opportunities
<li> marine sanctuary research and news
<li> new coral reef-related publications and reports
<li> announcements of coral reef science courses and field trips
<li> research and conservation initiatives and opportunities
<li> new and historical data availability
<li> coral reef ecosystem modeling topics
<li> controversial topics in coral reef ecology

<b>IMPORTANT!</b>  Messages with solicitations of a commercial or political nature, inflammatory commentary and other messages not appropriate for the Coral-List venue will not be approved for posting; these are messages categorized as follows:
 
- the pursuit of private commercial business activities or profit-making ventures
- matters directed toward the success or failure of a political party, candidate for partisan political office, or partisan political group
- use of Internet sites that result in an additional charge to the ICRS
- engaging in prohibited discriminatory conduct
- the obtaining or viewing of sexually explicit material
- any violation of statute or regulation
 
<b>Crowd-funding:</b> we require that any posting of a crowd-funding project contain a statement that says the entity or person making the post will not report a profit from the project to your government. For example, in the U.S. this could take the form of stating that your organization qualifies as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.  We ask that you limit yourself to at most two announcements of your funding drive, one at the beginning and one near the end.
 
<b>Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion:</b> Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are central to the founding ethos of the International Coral Reefs Society which has aimed to build a global community of reef scientists, working together to ensure the future of coral reef ecosystems.
 
<b>Cyberbullying:</b> Coral-List is a safe place for the exchange of ideas and opionions. The use of Coral-List to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person will be considered Cyberbullying. Online threats and mean, aggressive, or rude posts will not be tolerated. Posts containing cyberbullying may be deleted and violators may be removed or banned from Coral-List.
 
<b>Profanity prohibited:</b> Coral-List has a zero-tolerance policy regarding the use of profanity in messages sent to our subscribers. Violators of this policy may face consequences ranging from message rejection to the termination of your coral-list subscription, according to moderator discretion, and without possibility of appeal. Please make every effort to choose your words carefully and respectfully.
 
<b>Please Do Not Post Job Requests and Resumes.</b>  As you will see, Coral-List frequently has new employment positions posted.  If you try to post a job request or a resume, it will only get deleted. <b>No Binary Attachments.</b>  At present, Coral-List is a text-only medium.  Posts with attachments, such as images, PDF documents, or even small logos included in email footers, will usually be rejected by our software and the author will be asked by the moderators to re-submit their message without attachments.
