Hello,

Douglas Fenner asked me to share this with the listserve.

Here are some projects/documents on sea cucumber aquaculture. This emerging
industry could be a way of relieving pressure on wild sources while
contributing to diversified livelihoods, but, of course, it could also lead
to a whole new series of challenges, if not done with an ecosystem-based
and community-based approach.

One example to give an idea of possibilities:

KOTA KINABALU: The hatchery complex built by Borneo Green Aquaculture Sdn
Bhd, a Malaysian incorporated company and member of Borneo Green Group, in
Sabandar, recorded a successful spawning in October last year. Its
financial adviser Lee Sun Sui said this at a press conference at its booth
exhibiting its technologies for the breeding, seed production and culture
of sea cucumbers (Holothuria Scabra) at the State-level Farmers, Breeders
and Fishermen Day celebration venue at the KPD Complex in Tanjung Lipat,
here.

"Borneo Green Aquaculture Sdn Bhd has to date produced 250,000 juvenile sea
cucumbers. The company is currently expanding facilities in its hatchery in
Sabandar to increase its production capacity from the present 250,000 per
month to 500,000 per month," he said.

The company has aggressively conducted research and development in growout
techniques in Kudat. It has so far released 200,000 juveniles into grow-out
test sites.
