"To date thermal stress is the most lethal threat tropical corals are facing
in a
global warming world."

I'd have to respectfully disagree and say
"To date, ocean change (temperature, chemistry, turbidity, physical
disruption/destruction) is the most lethal threat to tropical corals"
....and if you really wanted to define that further it's the RATE of change.
Corals can adapt fine to thermal stress (by expanding ranges if necessary)
and probably most other changes if the rate of change was slow enough...but
unfortunately humans have accelerated oceanic changes far more rapidly than
many corals can likely adapt.
