Post-doctoral Fellow 

 

Centre for Marine Studies, University of Queensland 

A three-year post is available in Tropical Marine Palaeoecology to
undertake research on fossil Holocene reefs from Papua New Guinea and to
develop new Indo-Pacific projects 

This position is available with the Australian Research Council's Centre
of Excellence in Coral Reef Studies, which is an initiative involving
three Australian Universities; The University of Queensland, James Cook
University, and the Australian National University. The position will
conduct research at the cutting edge of tropical marine palaeoecology or
evolutionary turnover. The position will undertake research within The
Centre for Marine Studies at the University of Queensland. 

The Role: The Marine Palaeoecology Laboratory housed within the Centre
for Marine Studies at the University of Queensland is engaged in a broad
program of research investigating the long-term ecological dynamics of
Indo-Pacific coral reefs. Evolutionary and ecological studies are
conducted at temporal scales ranging from decades to tens of millions of
years. A major aspect of the successful appointees' work will be
undertaken on the systematics and ecology of corals, coralline algae, or
molluscs from the Holocene raised reef terrace of Papua New Guinea
(PNG). However, there is scope for additional research and prospective
applicants are requested to submit a brief project proposal that
complements the areas of research noted above. The successful appointee
will have access to ongoing research support, and will be encouraged to
apply for his/her own research funding. There are opportunities to work
with large historical and ecological data sets and to be part of
research teams, to address individually-developed and
collaboratively-generated research questions, and to supervise honours,
masters and doctoral students.

The Person: The successful candidate will apply expertise in marine
ecology, systematics, palaeoecology or related disciplines to the study
of long-term ecological or evolutionary dynamics of Indo-Pacific
tropical marine systems. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree and a
record of achievement and promise in the palaeoecology, systematics
and/or ecology of tropical marine organisms, marine palaeobiology, or
marine ecology. The successful candidate will have a strong track record
in research and scholarship in systematics, marine ecology or
palaeoecology, as demonstrated by published research in peer-reviewed
journals, and in acquiring funding for research. Applicants should also
have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly-productive
research career, a strong background in the design of ecological field
surveys, excellent statistical and analytic skills, very good writing
abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research
teams. 

Remuneration: This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 3 years at
Academic Research Level A. The total remuneration package will be in the
range $65,961 to $70,806 per annum, which includes employer
superannuation contributions of 17%.
