Major Duties
Serves as aqu= atic ecologist/physical scientist for NPS units in the
Pacific Island Netwo= rk (PACN). Helps document current conditions and
identify and analyze relev= ant activities and issues. Takes the lead
role in assisting the Network to = develop, evaluate, and coordinate
water-related inventories, monitoring, an= d associated management and
research programs. May oversee technicians and = other field staff who
perform aquatic ecology and water quality monitoring.= May train
cooperators of staff in Network National Parks to assist in perf orming some monitoring activities. Determines and documents the
significanc= e of findings by preparing management and scientific
reports regarding the = results of inventory, monitoring, and research
activities. Summarizes new a= nd existing information for use by
scientists, managers, Network and park s= taff, cooperators and
partners. In cooperation with appropriate staff from = the Network,
parks, WRD, researchers and others, designs, develops, tests, = and
implements scientific monitoring protocols to identify, evaluate, and
c= onduct long-term monitoring of aquatic ecosystem components. He/She
writes = monitoring documents that define monitoring; based on results
of monitoring= and in-depth studies, recommends scientifically
credible protection, mitig= ation, and restoration project.
Establishes and maintains professional cont= racts and provides
essential liaison services between the Network, includin= g its
constituent parks, and WRD, the regional I&M coordinator, other N= PS
networks, and key staff members of other federal, state, territorial
and= trust territory agencies. Identifies inventory, monitoring,
research and i= nformation needs and determines when cooperative
agreements, contracts, or = other instruments are appropriate. He/She
serves as the Contracting Officer= ?s Representative (COR), Agreements
Representative, or Key Official for pro= jects conducted through
contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative = agreements.
